Greek Police Strengthen Protection Following Protests Against Israel Passenger Liner

Greek officials have significantly increased protective protocols at two major harbors in an attempt to keep protesters from approaching a cruise liner transporting Israeli tourists on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Protests Trigger Increased Security

The heightened security at the Peloponnesian ports followed previous protests when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata in the past few days. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after local residents staged a protest on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"Despite the ceasefire, Israel is persisting with its military operations in Gaza," stated a schoolteacher who joined the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, non-combatant civilians are being killed."

Tourist Experience and Popular Opinion

Aboard the ship, travelers witnessed as protesters in Kalamata shouted: "You require the police, you're not wanted in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who dedicated the summer to coordinating anti-war protests across Greece, asserted: "Those Israelis who support the policies of their government aren't welcome here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Ties

An international relations expert explained: "Because of close location and our longstanding relationships with the Middle East, the ordinary Greek person is more responsive to what is happening in Gaza than the typical central or north European."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a complex circumstance," he added. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an partner than it is for many European nations."

Commercial and Travel Consequences

Government statistics show that over 600,000 Israeli visitors visited Greece in 2024, with projections of greater tourism this year. This considerable inflow underscores the greatly strengthened connection between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Alliance and Regional Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel serves as not only a important balance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also grants the added benefit of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its ties with Israel," stated Filis. "But from a ethical standpoint we must be more inclusive, more equitable, more committed to demonstrate the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and International Reaction

The extent of the Greek rally initiative has surprised Israeli authorities. Recently, the state's external affairs office advised travelers to remain inconspicuous, while domestic press described Athens as a "lost paradise" due to protest markings showing up on edifices in the downtown area.

Victor Eliezer of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece shared apprehension: "Of course we're anxious. The type of language we're encountering can quickly turn into discriminatory."

Future Developments and Demands

Gradually, protesters have targeted Athens' close ties with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the termination of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO facility that since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza has served as a important supply station for US military ships, fighter planes and vessels bound for Israel.

"We have achieved successes," declared an anti-racist coordinator. "Our central requirement, at present, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
