In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
